The Challenge

Starting April 1, 2024, the City of Winnipeg required short-term rental accommodation (STRA) owners to have a new license for a yearly fee, to rent out their homes. The fees start at $260/year for a primary residence, and adjust as the size of the STRA increases:

  • $260 for a non-primary residence tier 1, 1 bedroom property.
  • $520 for a non-primary residence tier 2, 2 bedroom property.
  • $780 for a non-primary residence tier 3, 3 bedroom property.

The Solution

To help in collecting this yearly fee, Upanup implemented a Drupal eCommerce integration to the online payment processor Global Payments, with record management.

The Results

This integration has helped the City of Winnipeg collect processing fees for 600+ new short-term rental accommodation licensing applications in the first few months alone.

This change will help the City enforce bylaw changes that include new safety measures and efforts to stop human trafficking in short-term rentals.
