Build a Website with Flexibility for the Future

flexible website solutions

In this ever-changing digital landscape, technology and trends seem to advance daily and websites need the ability to adapt. In order to stay relevant, and to have a site that visitors enjoy using, it is important to consider how your website will accommodate future growth. Can it expand with your organization? Can it integrate with new software? Can the design be refreshed at a later time for a more modern look?

These factors, along with many others, are important to consider when choosing a new platform for your site’s development. They are also one of the (countless) reasons we choose to develop our client websites on open-source platforms like Drupal and WordPress. The freedom, scalability, and flexibility of open-source content management systems (CMS) allow us to develop custom websites that our clients can rely upon for years to come. A perfect example of this is the Greater Victoria School District (GVSD).

We originally designed and developed the District’s main site, along with 47 school sites, using our custom implementation of WordPress in 2012. The features and functionality of these sites have supported the District, its schools, and its various users successfully for many years, however, last summer it was time for a facelift.

GVSD felt that while the original design of the main district site had suited their needs, they wanted to bring in more modern design trends. However, they did not want (or need) to invest the time and money to completely redevelop their site—they were happy with the backend and the site’s original sitemap—they just wanted an updated look.

GVSD's New Site Design

The flexibility of our custom implementation of WordPress allowed us to apply new designs to the site without compromising its foundation. Our front-end development team simply incorporated the new designs as a new theme in the CMS, using the original theme we developed for the site as a starting point, and kept the back-end functionality of the site the same—negating the need to completely rebuild the site from scratch. This flexibility allowed us to transform the site quickly. It only required a two-month turnaround from start to finish and didn’t cause any downtime to the site’s end users, allowing GVSD to launch their site’s makeover just in time for the new school year.

A website’s ability to grow with an organization and adapt to new technology is an important consideration when developing a new website. Setting up your site on a flexible, open-source platform with our custom implementation will give you the freedom to update the site in the future without starting from square one—creating long-term efficiencies that will give you confidence in your investment.
