New digital presence introduced for BC town

The Town of Oliver (B.C.) is located in the heart of the South Okanagan, home to internationally recognized wineries, and a great destination for tourists in western Canada. The Town has a growing population and is committed to providing its citizens and visitors with modern and easy-to-use forms of communication. They have launched a new website and municipal app for its citizens as well as an intranet for their Town staff, an important user group that requires clear communication to continuously provide optimized services.

The Challenge

The Town was in need of a refreshed digital presence and an optimized user interface to connect with users on the go and increase engagement. Upanup was selected to work with their internal team and provide solutions that would modernize their digital solutions while following accessibility and user experience (UX) best practices. We were excited to leverage a CiviKit Website to provide the Town with a website that is proven to meet the needs of other Canadian municipalities and their users.

The Town had an additional goal of improving its internal communication and workflows to ensure they were providing its citizens and visitors with enhanced digital services and customer service. They were able to identify specific pain points in their internal processes and determined that they required a new and improved intranet to assist their teams in meeting their goals. The Solution

Our team of project managers, developers, designers, and content strategists started this project by focusing on the municipal website. This included selecting a template and incorporating the Town's unique branding and content to ensure it resonated with its users. This approach ensured a lower cost and reduced timeline compared to a custom approach (see our article on templates vs custom designs).

The new intranet included: 

  • A streamlined, unique, and simple design for an efficient and enjoyable user experience.
  • The ability for internal staff to use this resource, follow processes, and communicate with others.
  • On-brand illustrations to provide the staff with an experience that reflects their internal culture. We ensured all images are uploaded at the same ratio so management is simple for staff while staying integral to the design.
  • Categories for their quick links so staff can quickly find popular information and work more efficiently.

We have also developed a mobile app for the Town that will provide an optimized user interface to connect with users on the go and increase engagement with citizens. The app features push notifications for news and alerts and will also connect to the Town's online service portal, all directly from users' personal devices.

The Results

As a result of our work, the Town now has the tools and systems to provide its citizens, businesses, and users with up-to-date information in a visually appealing, engaging, and easy-to-use way. The new website, intranet, and mobile app demonstrate the Town's commitment to improving its online communications and services. The website enables the Town to achieve its goal of a new and optimized interface through the use of features such as user menu options, this design template lets the user select a category (e.g. residents) that displays curated links and featured stories. This saves users time and provides a customized feel that meets their needs.

The intranet solution has provided the Town's internal team with a secure, central location to share information and resources. Their internal team can easily manage the content and failsafes such as filler images for empty content, ensuring the intranet continues to look its best and stay on brand.
