Mobile site launched for Amica
Upanup is pleased to have worked with Amica Mature Lifestyles to launch a new mobile website at amica.ca. Amica is a TSX-listed company known as Canada's most innovative operator of seniors' retirement residences with locations across British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. The mobile site can be viewed by going to www.amica.ca on your mobile device.
The site provides easy access to information for people on the move who are looking up information on seniors residences across Canada. Upanup is an expert provider of mobile optimization, primarily using responsive design techniques. In Amica's case, a full desktop site was already in place, with no desire to replace that site. As such, a solution was required to improve the user experience for those looking for specific Amica information on their mobile phones.
Upanup's approach for the Amica site follows the best practices for mobile websites as laid out by Google:
1. KEEP IT QUICK
Mobile users are often short on time, squeezing in online tasks as they go about their day. To help them, we designed the site to load fast and make copy easy to scan.
2. SIMPLIFY NAVIGATION
No one likes to be confused. Clear navigation and search functionality help mobile site visitors easily find what they need.
3. BE THUMB-FRIENDLY
People use their fingers to operate mobile devices – especially their thumbs. We design mobile sites so even large hands can easily interact with buttons and links.
4. DESIGN FOR VISIBILITY
A mobile-friendly site gets its message across without causing eyestrain. Our design makes it easy for customers to read the text.
5. MAKE IT ACCESSIBLE
We develop mobile sites to work across all mobile devices and all handset orientations using responsive design. This includes iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows phones.
6. MAKE IT EASY TO CONVERT
Customers are able to sign up for events, or register for more information with a virtual keyboard and no mouse. We have made it easy.
7. MAKE IT LOCAL
Consumers look for local info on their phones all the time. We have included functionality that helps people find locations nearby and get directions.
8. MAKE IT SEAMLESS
People now use multiple screens throughout the day. We have converted as much of the functionality of the desktop site to mobile as we can to create a seamless experience.
9. USE MOBILE SITE REDIRECTS
A mobile site redirect is code that can automatically tell if visitors are using a mobile device and send them to the mobile-friendly version of the site. While it's not necessary for fully responsive sites, we do implement this redirect code in cases like Amica so that site visitors automatically get the best version of the site for their needs.
10. LISTEN, LEARN AND ITERATE
Good mobile sites are user-centric, which means they’re built with input from the audience. We looked at desktop site usage to help us make decisions about what to include in the mobile site. As time goes on and more feedback is provided, there will likely be adjustments to improve on our solution.
